New Delhi, June 19: Delhi dasher and team India’s vice-captain- Virender Sehwag recovery process from a shoulder injury could take up to 12-16 weeks, ruling him out of the Champions Trophy in September.
Sehwag, who underwent a surgery on June 11 after a lesion was identified in his shoulder, had to sit out of India’s entire ill-fated World Cup campaign.
Sehwag had sustained the injury during the semi-finals of the IPL, where he was captaining Delhi Daredevils against the eventual champions Deccan Chargers. Even as there was an intense speculation over his fitness status during the build-up to the World Twenty20, Sehwag was part of the touring party to England.
The uncertainty over his injury even led to reports of a rift between him and the captain MS Dhoni.
Sehwag would be required to wear a sling for at least a month, while the lesion is expected to heal in six weeks. After 10 weeks, his shoulder would be evaluated after an operation to check whether he can throw a ball.
Indian team physio Nitin Patel will be monitoring Sehwag`s rehabilitation process and his stint at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore.
The Champions Trophy, which starts on September 24, is India`s next scheduled assignment after the upcoming short trip to the Caribbean, where the team would play 4 ODIs.
