Senior cops to be responsible for law and order: Mayawati

Under attack from opposition parties over law and order in the state, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati said that the senior officers will now be held accountable if the situation does not improve.

parties over law and order in the state, Uttar Pradesh Chief
Minister Mayawati said that the senior officers will now be
held accountable if the situation does not improve.

"Till now officers at local police station level were
held responsible if law and order deteriorated. Now senior
superintendent of police and deputy inspector generals will be
held accountable directly for law and order," Mayawati said
during a high-level meeting held last night to review law and
order situation in the state.

The CM during six-hours marathon meeting said that the
government was committed for better law and order situation
and ensure justice to poor and downtrodden sections of the
society.

"Any laxity and callous approach on these points will
not be tolerated," she told the police officers present in
the meeting and added that now onwards Inspector Generals will
be directly responsible for law and order situation in their
respective ranges.

"Keeping in mind the large population of the state it
had been decided to create another post of Additional Director
General of Police (law and order) in the state," she said.

She said that ADG Brij Lal will look into law and order
in west UP, whereas ADG AK Jain will be incharge of eastern
districts of the state.

Mayawati said that at state level principal secretary
home, DGP and two ADGs will be responsible for law and order.

She claimed that due to efforts of her government, law
and order situation had improved considerably, but added that
it should be improved further.
