New Delhi, March 14: The Supreme Court has ordered a stay on Richard Gere’s arrest after hearing a detailed petition on the Hollywood stars’ plea for stay on an arrest warrant issued against him by trial courts in connection with the kissing row involving actor Shilpa Shetty.

Earlier, senior advocate Indira Jaising informed a bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan, Justices Altamas Kabir and J M Panchal said that it would be difficult for the actor to come to India unless the warrants were stayed.

"Similar arrest warrants against Shilpa Shetty had earlier been stayed by the apex court," she added.

The Rajasthan and the Uttar Pradesh Police are armed with arrest warrants issued by courts for his controversial kissing scene with Shilpa Shetty at an AIDS awareness function last year for which the actor is quite wary.

Gere has requested the apex court to stay the execution of the arrest warrants. He also demanded from the State Governments to provide him with hassle free exit after the completion of his engagements.
