Trinamool-sponsored West Bengal bandh begins

The Trinamool Congress (TC) sponsored 12-hour West Bengal bandh began at 6 am this morning amidst tight security with lesser number of vehicles plying on the roads.

Kolkata, Oct 09: The Trinamool Congress (TC) sponsored 12-hour West Bengal bandh began at 6 am this morning amidst tight security with lesser number of vehicles plying on the roads.
Eastern Railway sources here said train services from Howrah and Sealdah were disrupted for some time due to squatting by bandh supporters but services were resumed following intervention by the police.

A number of long distance trains arrived at Howrah, Sealdah and Kolkakta Railway stations as per schedule in the morning while many long distance trains left for their destinations.

Passengers who arrived by long distance trains at Howrah, Sealdah and Kolkata Railway stations were inconvenienced due to lack of taxis and private buses.

Government buses and trams were plying but very few private buses and taxis were plying.

Police sources said there was no report of any untoward incident till 7 am.

The bandh was called to protest against "police excesses" on a peaceful Trinamool Congress agitation led by party chief Mamata Banerjee against farmland acquisition for Tata Motors small car project at Singur.
