All India Tyre Dealers Federation, on Thursday, demanded stringent and accountable tyre-testing standards in the country in the wake of increased faulty tyre recall in the US.
The safety concerns of tyre users have crossed the boundaries of their parent country and Indian tyre brands cannot escape the responsibility for safety and commodity liability at par with foreign partners, a federation release, said here on Thursday.

At a time when open import of tyres is permitted and Indian tyre makers have technical tie-ups with several multinational companies, there is an urgent need to bring stringent and accountable tyre testing standards in India in tune with those prevailing in other countries like USA and Japan, it said.
Over 8,000 tyre dealers market all brands, both domestic and imported, worth Rs 7,500 crore annually and the dealers do not have any answer to the anxiety of the consumers on the safety aspect, it said.
As per the us, safety standards, any defect above five per cent of the production of particular size of tyre has to be reported to safety agency and the tyres have to be recalled, while in India even 25-30 per cent failure has not led to recall, the federation said.
