A youth on Sunday entered the sanctum sanctorum of the Golden Temple and allegedly committed "sacrilegious" act, triggering tension in the holy complex.

Amritsar, April 26: A youth on Sunday entered the
sanctum sanctorum of the Golden Temple and allegedly committed
"sacrilegious" act, triggering tension in the holy complex.

21-year-old Rajiv Singh, a baptised Sikh who has been
living near the Golden Temple since his childhood, was
arrested for allegedly committing "sacrilegious" act inside
the Golden Temple and hurting the sentiments of Sikh
community, SSP Kunvar Vijay Pratap Singh said.

The incident sparked tension in the complex and some
hardliners there initially refused to handover the youth to
the police.

"No one expected that such a situation may arise in
such a pious place," he said, maintaining that the youth had
allegedly entered the sanctum sanctorum where the holy Guru
Granth Sahib is kept.

Official sources said the Chief Secretary and the
state DGP were kept informed of the situation from time to
time.

Rajiv had entered the sanctum sanctorum at around 3.00
am, police sources said, adding that the agitated Golden
Temple authorities allowed police to take him away only at
around 7.00 am.

The SSP said the family members of Rajiv were also
being questioned by the police to "know the state of mind of
the youth."
