'Either Rahul Or...' Shashi Tharoor Predicts Next PM Of 'Family-Run' Party Congress

The remark comes even as the former Congress president Rahul Gandhi made an effort to distance himself from dynastic politics when the question was posed to him at a news conference in Aizawl, Mizoram today.

'Either Rahul Or...' Shashi Tharoor Predicts Next PM Of 'Family-Run' Party Congress

With the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 eight months away, the clamour around the prime ministerial candidates is growing louder. While the BJP will go to the polls seeking a third straight term for Narendra Modi, the opposition PM candidate's face is not clear yet because the newly formed INDIA alliance is shying away from projecting any face. Meanwhile, Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor has said that if the Congress wins the 2024 polls, Rahul Gandhi could become prime minister as Congress is a 'family-run' party in many ways.

Tharoor, however, also said that Congress president Malikarjun Kharge could also become PM from the Congress. He said that Kharge could become the first Dalit Prime Minister of India if not Rahul Gandhi. "But at the same time, the merit of the parliamentary system is the Prime Minister is the first among equals and other ministers also have great responsibility for their work so whatever responsibility is assigned to me, I am confident I can do work," said Tharoor.

Tharoor's statement came despite the former Congress president, Rahul Gandhi, attempting to distance himself from dynastic politics during a news conference in Aizawl, Mizoram today.  "What is exactly the son of Amit Shah doing? What does Rajnath Singh's son do? Last I heard, Amit Shah's son is running Indian cricket. Many of their (BJP) children like Anurag Thakur, are dynasties," Rahul Gandhi said in an effort to put the ball back in the BJP court.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP have repeatedly accused the Congress of being a dynasty party and it was this allegation that forced the Gandhi family to distance themselves from the party's presidential polls. Tharoor and Kharge were among the candidates and Kharge was elected Congress president with the majority votes.
