Day after terror attack on Amarnath pilgrims: As it happened

Srinagar: Seven Amarnath pilgrims were killed and 12 injured when terrorists opened fire at a vehicle on the Srinagar-Jammu Highway on Monday night. A police official said the attack took place at Anantnag's Batengo area around 8.30 p.m. on Monday. 

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh held a high-level meeting at his residence in New Delhi today to take stock of the situation, while officials from the ministry travelled to Srinagar to review security arrangements for the rest of the yatris.

Talking to media, Gujarat bus driver Salim, who risked his life to save Amarnath Yatris said, "God gave me strength to keep moving, and I just did not stop. Lagatar firing huyi, main isliye ruka nahi, bus chalata raha (I did not stop the bus beacuse there was continuous firing)."

Salim drove the bus to safety amid continuous firing by a group of heavily armed terrorists who attacked the bus which was returning from the Amarnath Shrine.
