3 lakh houses damaged in Bengal due Cyclone 'Yaas', says CM Mamata Banerjee

Cyclone Yaas, which has intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm, will make landfall near Dhamra Port in Bhadrak district in Odisha around noon.

Cyclone Yaas made landfall in Odisha on Wednesday (May 26) and triggering light to moderate rainfall in Odisha, West Bengal and Jharkhand, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted. While heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in these states is also expected. Cyclone Yaas, which has intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm, made landfall near Dhamra Port in Bhadrak district around noon. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a keynote address on the occasion of "Virtual Vesak Global Celebrations" on Buddha Purnima today. The event was organised by the culture ministry in association with the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC). Around 50 most prominent Buddhist religious leaders from around the world addressed the congregation, the Prime Minister's Office said.

Farmer unions observed 'black day' today on completion of six months of their protests against the Centre's three farm laws. Samkyukt Kisan Morcha, an umbrella body of protesting farmer unions, had announced that farmers will observe May 26 as 'Black Day' to mark the completion of six months. 

Meanwhile, the Delhi Police has urged people not to hold gatherings due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing lockdown in the national capital. It said it is keeping a tight vigil to deal with any situation at the protest sites on the city's borders, PTI reported.

Cyclone Yaas: Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik directs officials to repair all roads within 24 hours. As many as 605 roads have been damaged of which 495 have been repaired in Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Balasore, Bdahrak districts. It then moved northwestwards and lay centred at 11:30 am over north coastal Odisha about 15 km south-southwest of Balasore: India Meteorological Department (IMD)

Landfall process started around 9 o'clock and is expected to continue for 3-4 hrs. It's expected that by around 1 pm, tail end of cyclone will also be completely moving to landmass. It's making landfall between Dhamra and Balasore: Odisha Spl Relief Commissioner PK Jena said. 

"It'll continue to move in Balasore dist till afternoon, after which it will enter Mayurbhanj district. Wind speed is estimated to be around 120-140 km per hr. It is expected that this wind speed will continue in Balasore dist around 120-140 km per hour," he added. 

"In Mayurbhanj district, the wind speed is expected to be around 100-110 km per hour. After that, it will gradually slow down," Jena said.
