Cyclone Yaas: Task Forces in WB, Odisha are on standby for relief operations

The Odisha state government has urged the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard to remain vigilant.

In view of Cyclone Yaas, predicted to cross Odisha-West Bengal coast by May 26 morning, the Odisha government has already put at least 14 districts on high alert. The state government has also urged the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard to remain vigilant. 

The rising cases of black fungus infection across the country have become a huge concern. Many states have declared it as a “notified disease” under the Epidemic Act. Recently, Uttar Pradesh has declared black fungus a notifiable disease under the Epidemic Diseases Act of 1897.

Several states have imposed COVID-19 induced lockdown in order to curb the spread of the infection. Kerala has extended lockdown till May 30. The Karnataka government also extended lockdown till June 7 in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A low-pressure area has formed over east central Bay of Bengal today the 22nd May 2021 morning (0830 hrs IST). It is very likely to concentrate into a depression over east central Bay of Bengal by tomorrow, the 23rd May morning. It is very likely move north-northwestwards, intensify into a Cyclonic Storm by 24th May and further into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm during the subsequent 24 hours. Indian Navy is closely monitoring the movement of the Cyclonic Storm. Headquarters, Eastern Naval Command, and Naval Officers-in-Charge at West Bengal and Odisha Area have carried out preparatory activities to combat the effects of Cyclone ‘Yaas’ and is in constant liaison with the State Administrations for rendering assistance as required.

Eight flood relief teams and four diving teams are prepositioned at Odisha and West Bengal to augment the existing resources. Four naval ships are on standby with Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) bricks, diving, and medical teams to render assistance in the most affected areas along the Odisha and West Bengal coast. Naval aircraft are kept ready at Naval Air Stations, INS Dega at Visakhapatnam and INS Rajali near Chennai to undertake aerial survey of the most affected areas, casualty evacuation, and airdrop of relief material as required.

Barge P305 incident: A total of 61 bodies recovered by Mumbai police. At least 26 bodies handed over to the relatives of the deceased after post mortem and other formalities from JJ Hospital, says Mumbai Police.

There are several bodies that are quite decomposed and are difficult to identify. Police arrange DNA sampling of the relatives to match with the bodies: Mumbai Police (ANI)

"White fungus (Aspergillosis) is not as dangerous as black fungus. The treatment for the latter can continue for 1-1.5 months hence early diagnosis is critical. Don't take steroids to treat COVID-19 without consulting your doctor," Dr Suresh Kumar, MD LNJP Hospital, Delhi told ANI. 

He added,, "Fungus grows in cramped and humid spaces so keep ensure that your surroundings are cleaned regularly. Avoid consuming eatables refrigerated for days, eat fresh fruits, let sunlight in your house and wash your masks daily."
