LIVE: Karnataka temporarily suspends Covid vaccination for 18-44 age group

Maharashtra, the worst COVID-19-hit state, recorded 40,956 new cases on Tuesday, while 793 more patients succumbed to the infection.

New Delhi: Due to the acute shortage of COVID-19 vaccines in Maharashtra, the state government decided to temporarily suspend its drive to vaccinate people in the age group of 18 to 44 and divert the available stock of doses for the above-45 age group, Health Minister Rajesh Tope said. This decision was taken during the state cabinet meeting.

12 opposition leaders including Sonia Gandhi, Sharad Pawar, Uddhav Thackeray, Mamata Banerjee, MK Stalin, Hemant Soren and Akhilesh Yadav wrote a joint letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi slamming the government over its handling of COVID-19 situation and demanding free, universal mass vaccination campaign across the country, stopping construction of Central Vista project and repeal of three new farm laws.

Several parts of India may witness rain and thunderstorm in next 3-4 days, the ministry of earth sciences has predicted and temperature could drop in the national capital by few notches. Thunderstorm with lightning, hail and squall is likely at isolated places over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Telangana, said the Ministry of Earth Sciences.

The Karnataka government decided to import vaccines, as shortage of dosages hit the state and the demand went up substantially with alarming rise in COVID cases. The state government also decided to suspend the vaccination for people between 18-44 years age group, which had started symbolically on May 1, till further orders.

With the Indian Meteorological Department warning of a cyclonic storm in the Arabian Sea by May 16, the Indian Coast Guard ordered Karnataka fishermen to return to the shore. The Samajwadi Party (SP) on Wednesday said the Uttar Pradesh government, which claims that the World Health Organization (WHO) has lauded its COVID-19 management, has not hesitated from using unethical ways to hide its 'failures'. In a statement, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav said the BJP government, which has 'fudged' the figure of COVID casualties, is not even pained by the sight of bodies flowing in the Ganga and patients dying at the doorstep of hospitals.

"It would have been better had the chief minister informed us as regards when the poor people will be vaccinated and when action will be taken against those indulging in hoarding and black-marketing of oxygen cylinders, injections and medicines," he said.

Andhra Pradesh registered 21,452 fresh cases of coronavirus, from 90,750 tests, in 24 hours ending 9 am on Wednesday, while 19,095 recoveries and 89 deaths were also reported. The latest bulletin said the cumulative Covid-19 positives shot up to 13,44,386, recoveries to 11,38,028 and toll 8,988. The state now has 1,97,370 active cases, the bulletin said.

ASI monuments to remain closed for visitors till May 31

All centrally-protected monuments under the Archaeological Survey of India will continue to remain closed till May 31 due to a surge in COVID-19 cases, Union Culture Minister Prahlad Patel said.  An order to this effect was issued by the ASI and it was tweeted by Patel. These monuments are currently closed for the public till May 15 by an earlier order.

DRDO: PM CARES Fund has approved procurement of 1,50,000 units of Oxycare System developed by DRDO at a cost of Rs 322.5 Cr. It's a SpO2 based Oxygen Supply System, that regulates oxygen being administered to patients based on sensed SpO2 levels. Under this sanction 1,00,000 manual and 50,000 automatic Oxycare systems along with NRBM masks are being procured. The Oxycare system delivers supplemental oxygen based on the SpO2 levels and prevents the person from sinking in to a state of Hypoxia, which can be fatal. This system was developed by Defence Bio-Engineering & Electro Medical Laboratory (DEBEL), Bengaluru of DRDO for soldiers posted at extreme high-altitude areas.
