Rahul Gandhi postpones 'Padayorukkam' rally in Kerala after storm alert

NEW DELHI: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi will not attend the 'Padayorukkam' rally in Kerala on December 1 due to a storm forecast in the state, his office said on Thursday.

The ruling United Democratic Front's (UDF) event in Thiruvananthapuram has now been rescheduled to the second week of December, it said.

The rally has been organised to mark the culmination of a month-long Padayorukkam road-show in the state.

The party had set a target of mobilising 100,000 workers for the show on the Shanghumukham beach.

“Padayorukkam” in Malayalam language means 'preparation for the big battle', referred to the general elections, which is 18 months away.

The party is planning a series of "agitational" programmes in the run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Congress has 46 Lok Sabha MPs from the state.
