Markets close on negative note, Nifty holds 11,000

New Delhi: Markets closed on a negative note on Friday though the NSE Nifty still held on to 11,000 level on weak global cues.

The BSE Sensex closed 53.99 points or 0.15 percent down to 36,671.43 while the NSE Nifty dropped 22.80 points or 0.21 percent to 11,035.40. Intra-day Sensex saw high of 36,753.59 and a low of 36,592.93 while the Nifty shuttled between 11,049.00 and 11,008.95 in the day.

Major laggards were Tata Motors, HCL Tech, Tata Steel, Vedanta, Infosys, ONGC, Asian Paints, L&T, Maruti, Indus Ind Bank, Coal India, and RIL, shedding upto 3.99 percent.

Bucking the trend, top gainers were NTPC, Bajaj Auto, Bajaj Finance, Sun Pharma, ITC, TCS, Hero MotoCorp, Yes Bank, HDFC, HDFC Bank, Kotak Bank and SBI, rising upto 4.28 percent.

Sectorally, the BSE metal index lost the most at 1.57 percent, followed by IT and teck.

Meanwhile, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought shares worth a net Rs 1,137.85 crore on Thursday, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) were net sellers to the tune of Rs 925.46 crore, provisional data available with BSE showed.
