Will you have a 13-digit mobile number from July? Here's the truth

New Delhi: There is a buzz around that soon 10-digit mobile numbers will be converted into 13 digit. However, the reality is totally different.

It is not the mobile numbers but the 10 digit M2M numbers that will gradually become 13 digit.

A meeting was convened by DoT on Jan 8, 2018 on this issue. During the meeting, the decision was conveyed regarding implementation of 13-digit numbering scheme for Machine 2 Machine  communication. It was decided that 13-digit M2M numbering plan will be implemented from July 1, 2018.

As per a communication between state run BSNL and telecom equipment makers Nokia and ZTE, from this date onwards, all new M2M mobile connections will be allocated 13-digit numbers only.

All TSP's must ensure that their network elements including IT and other relevant systems are aligned with 13-digit numbering for M2M SIMs before 1st July 2018.

COAI's DG Rajan Mathews said, "This 13 digit will only be reserved for internet of things. if you want to connect your refrigerator, if you want to connect your car, washing machine. These will now be used for those things. it will have no impact on your present (mobile) numbering schemes."

The readiness of LI system has also to be ensured for 13-digit numbers before July 1, 2018.

Migration of existing 10-digit M2M numbers to 13 digits will start latest by October 1, 20I8 and shall be completed by December 31, 2018.
