Mumbai: The authorities have arrested a man in connection with the devastating fire that broke out at a shop on Khairani road here on Monday.

At least 12 people were killed and four others were critically injured in the incident. 

The fire broke out at Khairani road's confectionery maker Bhanu Farsan's shop.

The blaze erupted in the shop at Makaria Compound on Khairani Road around 4.25 am following which the structure collapsed, an official of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's disaster management cell said.

Senior Sub-inspector at Sakinaka Police station A Dharmadhikari said that least 25 fire tenders have been rushed to the spot to douse the fire. 

The situation was soon brought under control, he said later.

People sleeping inside the shop got trapped inside while those sleeping outside escaped unhurt, police said. 

The 12 victims were rushed to a hospital where doctors declared them dead before admission.

The exact cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained, he added. 

The authorities also launched a probe to investigate into the matter.

In another incident, a major fire broke out in a chemical unit in Turbhe node of neighbouring Navi Mumbai last evening.

The blaze started at the unit, located in TTC area, at around 5 PM.

At least six fire tenders have been rushed to the spot to douse the fire, the official said without elaborating.
