New Delhi: In yet another incident which is likely to escalate confrontation between the Centre and the Arvind Kejriwal government, Delhi's ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday released a shocking video showing Delhi Police officials using excessive force on women student protesters.

According to reports, a delegation of students, including some girls, belonging to the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) was staging a peaceful protest outside the RSS headquarters here on Saturday (Jan 30).

They were protesting against the death of Hyderabad University Dalit PhD scholar Rohith Vemula.

However, a scuffle broke out between them and another group of students and the situation soon turned violent after that.

In order to disperse the agitating students, the Delhi Police personnel deployed on duty allegedly used extreme force on the protesting students.

The AAP video also shows some Delhi policemen in plain clothes mercilessly beating up students, including girls.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Commission of Women (DCW) has taken suo-moto cognizance of the matter and asked the victims to record their statement and demanded strict action against guilty policemen.

''It is absolutely shocking to see the excessive use of force by Delhi policemen on protesting women students. We demand a strict action against all those policemen involved in the incident,'' Swati Maliwal, DCW chief told reporters.

Why there was no female cop during the protest? Will issue notice to Delhi Police over this brutality, Maliwal stated.

Video clearly shows male cops are beating females. I urge female protesters to come and record their statement so that we can take action, she added. The DCW chief also asked Delhi Police to identify those in plain clothes who were seen thrashing girl students ruthlessly.

Meanwhile, the incident appears to have snowballed into a major political issue with most of the parties demanding a judicial probe into the incident.

However, no official reaction in this regard has come from Delhi Police.
