Delhi court shuts brothel, jails 'madam' for running prostitution den

New Delhi: A Delhi court has sentenced a 36-year-old woman to three years in jail for running a prostitution den and her brothel in the red light area on the GB Road here be shut.

The fast-track court of Additional Sessions Judge Ramesh Kumar held Kanchi Tamang guilty under Section 3 (punishment for keeping a brothel or allowing premises to be used as a brothel) of the Immoral Trafficking (Prevention) Act and slapped a fine of Rs 2,000 on her.

"Accordingly, in view of Section 18(2) (magistrate's power to order closure of brothel and eviction of offenders) of the Act, it is hereby directed that the brothel be sealed with immediate effect," the court said in its September 2 order. The order was made available on Tuesday.

The court directed that a copy of its order be sent to the Station House Officer of the Kamla Market Police Station in central Delhi for necessary action and compliance.

Police came across the case after receiving information in December 2014 that three women inmates of the brothel had escaped. Police found the three and sent them for counselling.

One of the women told the police that her husband took her to the brothel where she was forced to have sex with customers.

She said she met two other women at the brothel who were taken there through deceit. Thereafter, the three decided to escape.

During the trial, Tamang denied the charge and claimed she was falsely implicated in the case.
