EDMC to clear all garbage by today

New Delhi: All striking sanitation workers of the cash-strapped East Delhi Municipal Corporation have resumed work and all garbage left piled up in its area will be cleaned up by Friday.

Chairman of EDMC's Standing Committee BB Tyagi on Thursday said civic life in east Delhi is trudging back to normal as safai karmacharis after returning to work are busy clearing the streets of waste dumped in the last few days.

"Our safai karmacharis have resumed work, all of them now. Most of them had resumed by yesterday (Wednesday) only. And, now the corporation is getting cleared the garbage left dumped in the streets during the stir," he said.

On last Friday, over 12,000 safai karmacharis had gone on a strike called by the Delhi Pradeshik Karmchari Union, demanding payment of their due salaries, among others.

East Delhi Municipal Commissioner Amit Yadav had last week said that the corporation had released their salaries for the month of February, but the stir had continued until Tuesday when the civic body said that most of the workers had resumed work.

The areas mainly affected due to spread of garbage was Patparganj, Laxmi Nagar, Mayur Vihar, among others, and Tyagi said, "by Friday, all the left over garbage would also be cleared."

On the ongoing stand-off between the BJP-led civic body and the AAP government on the "taking over" issue of the EDMC, he said, "such statements are irresponsible and childish”.

"Delhi government and AAP leaders must know the DMC Act before making such statements. It is irresponsible and childish," he said.

Delhi's Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Tuesday had said that the Delhi government would be happy to "take over" the East Delhi Municipal Corporation if the civic body was unable to handle it, setting the AAP and the BJP-led corporations for another showdown.
