Petition seeking freeze on BJP's lotus symbol in Delhi High Court

A bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw posted the matter for hearing on January 5 next year before another bench after the petitioner in person advanced his arguments in Hindi.

New Delhi: A plea was on Friday moved before the Delhi High Court seeking freezing of BJP's election symbol "Lotus" on the ground that it "represents the manifestation of God" and its use during elections was "illegal".

A bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw posted the matter for hearing on January 5 next year before another bench after the petitioner in person advanced his arguments in Hindi.

"List before another bench on January 5, 2016," it said.

"Direct respondent no.1 and 2 (Ministry of Law and Justice and Election Commission of India) to remove Lotus from list of free and unrestricted symbol of poll panel as well as from the election symbol of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in interest of national Justice," the plea by an NGO stated.

Lotus represents the manifestation of God, and is also a symbol of purity and tenderness, the plea added.
