Patna: The decision on new JD(U) leader was postponed till Monday at the party`s Legislature meeting on Sunday as the MLAs unanimously chose Nitish Kumar as their leader while refusing to accept his resignation.
“Haven`t accepted Nitish`s resignation. Without him, the state won`t progress,” JD(U) leader Sanjay Singh said soon after the party meet at Nitish Kumar`s residence.
However, Nitish has sought a day`s time to rethink his decision of stepping down.
According to reports, JD(U) MLAs are adamant to accept nobody other than Nitish Kumar as their chief minister.
“We want Nitish Kumar to continue as the CM, he has worked in Bihar,” JD(U) leader Neeraj Kumar said.
JD(U) MLAs will conduct a meeting tomorrow again to take a final decision over the matter.
Holding JD(U) president Sharad Yadav responsible for the dismal performance of the party in 2014 General Elections, party general secretary KC Tyagi said, “Sharad Yadav should resign.”
Sharad Yadav faced protest from the party supporters who had assembled outside Kumar`s residence here for allegedly being a reason for Kumar`s resignation.
Meanwhile, upping the ante against its one time alliance partner JD(U), the Bharatiya Janata Party today asked the Bihar Governor to dissolve the state Assembly.
“We met the Governor and said a minority government has been running in Bihar for the last 11 months,” BJP leader Sushil Modi.
The BJP today met the state governor DY Patil and slammed the JD(U) saying the unstable state government is hampering the development work in Bihar.
He added, “Bihar is politically unstable right now, we spoke to the Governor about the horsetrading going on, which isn`t good for Bihar.”
“They (JDU) are plotting so that elections aren`t held in Bihar but they will be held in 6 months,” LJP president Ram Vilas Paswan said.
After registering a landslide victory in alliance with BJP, LJP had said that Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government may fall soon and a mid-term elections in the state by October-November this year.
Nitish Kumar tendered his resignation yesterday citing it was his "duty to take moral responsibility" for the results.
A large number of supporters of Kumar met today at his residence asking MLAs to choose only him as the legislature party leader and putting pressure on Kumar to withdraw his resignation.
The JD-U won only two of the 40 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar. In 2009, it had won 20 seats when it was in alliance with the BJP.
This time, the BJP won 22 seats and its ally, the Lok Janashakti Party (LJP), won six and Rashtriya Lok Samata Party (RLSP) won three. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) won four, while its ally Congress two and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) bagged one seat.
Assembly polls are due in Bihar in 2015.
Upbeat over the unexpected victory, the Bharatiya Janata Party had already demanded the resignation of Nitish Kumar for his party`s rout in polls.
