Panaji: Around 30 inmates of Sada sub-jail have been shifted to the newly constructed Colvale prison after the slab on the first floor of the facility in Vasco collapsed following heavy rain.

"Out of total 150 inmates, 30 were shifted to Colvale as the slab on the first floor of Sada sub-jail collapsed. The Public Works department will initiate repair work soon," Inspector General of Prisons Elvis Gomes told reporters here yesterday.

The slab over five cells came crashing down apparently due to incessant rains that hit the coastal state on Sunday.

However, none of the inmates were injured.

"The repair work will begin immediately and will finish in next 15 days. But there can be delay in the completion, if torrential rains continues," Assistant Engineer (PWD) A D Nagarchi said.

He said recently PWD had worked out estimates to repair the building of Sada sub jail which had developed cracks.
