Ahmedabad: Surat-based Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT) suspended its two of its faculty members today, after an internal committee gave adverse reports against them, in an alleged case of sexual harassment of girl students.

"We suspended two professors namely Vivekanand Mishra of electronics and communications faculty as well as Ranjit Roy of technical faculty today, after the institute's internal complaint committee gave adverse reports against them, citing their involvement in a case of sexual harassment against some girl students," SVNIT registrar H A Parmar told PTI.

Another professor N B Kanirkar, who was also named in the complaint filed by girls, has been discharged in the case, Parmar said.

He said that action was initiated against the faculty members after some girl students complained that they had sexually harassed them.

When asked if any police complaint was filed on behalf of the institute, Parmar said that he was not aware if any such complaint was filed.

The authorities initiated an inquiry in the case, after students of the institute protested in its premises demanding action against the accused.

According to female students, the professors allegedly insisted upon meeting girls alone in their office and sexually abused them.
