Bangalore to host ASICON 2012 from December 23

Bangalore: Various issues related to HIV would come up for discussion during the three-day National Conference of AIDS Society of India (ASICON) 2012 will be held here from December 23-25.

Karnataka, which is one of the worst HIV-affected states next to Andhra Pradesh, is hosting for the first time the event, expected to be attended by about 550 experts.

ASICON President Dr Ishwar S Gilada told reporters here that about 50 national speakers representing who`s who in HIV field would deliver lectuers.

Issues like HIV treatment, what combinations should be used, adverse effect of drugs, opportunistic infections and HIV associated cancers, newer drugs in pipeline and vaccine will be discussed, he said.

The conference would also deliberate on multi-drug resistant, extremely drug resistant and totally drug resistant (MDR/XDR/TR) TB, challenging situation with MDR/XDR HIV, Immune Reconstitution Inflammatory Syndrome (IRIS), a serious disease situation caused by regaining the lost immunity following successful ART, Gilada said.

Union Minister for Health Ghulam Nabi Azad, Karnataka Medical Education Minister A Ramdas and Chairman of Forum of Parliamentarians on AIDS Oscar Fernandes will attend the conference among others, he said.
