Gurgaon: More than 40 birds, which are migratory birds, were reportedly found dead inside the Sultanpur National Park, Gurgaon, on Saturday, triggering fears of bird flu in the region.
Following which, the park, a bird sanctuary on Gurgaon-Farrukhnagar Road, has been shut for a week.
The dead birds were found by the park management on Saturday and sent for the avian flu tests. Though they didn't show signs of an H5NI infection, the management decided to close the park as precautionary measure.
“Prima facie, the deaths seem to have happened after the birds ate pesticide-infested crops at a nearby field,” KS Khatkar, District Forest Officer was quoted as saying.
“In case of bird flu, birds develop red spots in their legs. None of the birds that died had these spots,” he added.
Last month, over 100 ducks were culled at Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh after an H5N1 (avian virus) infection was confirmed in one of the geese that died at the lake.
