Winnipeg: Amidst global concern regarding Ebola virus, Canada’s government decided to donate doses of an experimental Ebola vaccine to the World Health Organization.
This deadly virus is the world's largest and deadliest and has killed more than a 1,000 people in West Africa.
This experimental vaccine is called VSV-EBOV and was developed by the National Microbiology Laboratory.It will offer up between 800 to 1,000 doses to the WHO and will keep a small supply in case it’s needed in Canada.
Health Minister Rona Ambrose said she offered the vaccine to Dr. Margaret Chan, director general of the WHO.
We see this as a global resource, something we need to put on the global table to say ... how can we make best use of this asset? "We're looking to do that as fast as we can," said Dr Greg Taylor, deputy chief public health officer of the Public Health Agency of Canada.
