Ebola death toll crosses 1000: WHO

Washington: A press statement issued by the World Health Organization (WHO) has revealed that the number of deaths caused by the Ebola virus in West Africa has crossed 1,000.

The WHO confirmed on Monday that 1,013 people have died so far in the epidemic that hit Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and possibly Nigeria a few months ago, reported CBS News.

Authorities have identified 1,848 suspected or confirmed cases of the ailment that has no licensed vaccine or cure so far.

The disease causes high fever, vomiting and bleeding and was first identified in Guinea in March.

Meanwhile, medical organizations are struggling to find a treatment for the epidemic that has spread beyond control in West Africa. An experimental drug has been given to three people who are infected with the disease.
