Incidence of breast cancer more in India compared to US

Coimbatore: The incidence of breast cancer was on the rise in India, particularly in the rural areas, a top radiologist from the United States said on Saturday.

Since women in rural areas and to some extent in urban areas, were averse to approach doctors for tests, they come only at an advanced stage, leading to deaths, Manasi Saxena of Masschusetts Hospital, Boston told reporters here.

Manasi, here to participate in an International Conference on breast cancer and female reproductive organs, also claimed that compared to the number of women approaching for examinations in US, the number was less in India.

 Moreover, deaths due to breast and cervical cancers were also more in India compared to US, she said.

 Stating that one per cent of total reported cases of breast cancer across the world were among men, Dr Nalla G Palanisami, Chairman, Kovai Medical Center and Hospital, the organisers, said for the last six years, the hospital has reported six male cancer cases.

Around 200 participants from all over India participated in the conference, with experts from US delivering lectures through video-conferencing, he said.
