Kolkata: Another person succumbed to swine flu in the state taking the toll to seven since January even as the number of those infected by the disease in the 24 hours crossed the 100 mark.

"One person from the city died of swine flu while we have reports of 12 fresh cases of infection, taking the number to 112 this year," Principal Secretary (Health and Family Welfare) Moloy Dey said.

The deceased, a resident of the city, was among the seven who were in a "serious" condition for the last couple of days, he said.

"Among the 12 new cases, six persons are from the city, two are from South 24-Parganas district and one each from Howrah, Malda, Nadia, and Paschim Midnapore districts," Dey said, adding, that 21 patients were admitted to different government hospitals while 29 others were treated at private facilities.

In the last 24 hours, six patients were discharged from different hospitals in the state after they recovered fully, the health official said.

So far, 55 patients have been released from different hospitals after their recovery since February 25.

Meanwhile, 77 medical shops all around the state have been granted permission to sell medicine for swine flu, he said.

"We have plenty of medicine to tackle swine flu in West Bengal there is nothing to worry about that. We have given permission to 77 medical shops all around the state to sell the medicines for the H1N1 virus which come under the Scheduled X Drugs," Dey added.

To purchase medicines under the Scheduled X Drugs in India, production of a doctor's prescription has been made mandatory, a photocopy of which would be retained by the medical shop.

In fact, the medical shop would also take a note of the patient's residential address.
