Spain reports first Zika-infected pregnancy case in Europe

The health ministry said on Thursday that the woman, who had recently returned from Colombia, showed symptoms and is in her third trimester of pregnancy.

Madrid: Spanish officials confirmed that a pregnant woman is among seven people diagnosed with the Zika virus, making it the first such case in Europe.

The statement by health ministry added that she was under medical supervision in the northeastern region of Catalonia.

 

Earlier this week, the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the Zika virus, linked to microcephaly condition, a global public health emergency.

The WHO had on Thursday advised countries against accepting blood donations from people who had travelled to Zika-affected regions.
