World No Tobacco Day: PM Modi urges people to say no to tobacco consumption

New Delhi: In a bid to promote a healthier and tobacco-free India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday called for spreading awareness on the risks of tobacco consumption on the occassion of World No Tobacco Day.

He took to microblogging website Twitter to encourage every Indian to pledge not only to reduce tobacco consumption but also spread awareness about 

"On World No Tobacco Day, lets pledge to spread awareness on the risks of tobacco consumption & work to reduce tobacco consumption in India," Modi's tweet said.

He further called on taking action to reduce tobacco consumption in India. As per studies, our country is the third largest producer of tobacco and the second largest consumer of tobacco products worldwide.

"Saying no to tobacco consumption will lay the foundation of a healthier India as the habit not just affects the person who is smoking, but also people around him," said the PM.

"Tobacco not only affects those consuming it but also people around. By saying no to tobacco, let us lay the foundation of a healthier India," Modi's another tweet said.

Each year May 31 is observed as World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) with an aim to spread awareness about the ills of tobacco consumption.
