Be responsible, don't make contentious remarks: Jailtley to workers

Facing opposition's ire over controversial remarks made by some of its leaders, BJP today made it clear that all party workers should realise their responsibility and not create unnecessary controversies at a time when the country is happy with government's performance.

Bengaluru: Facing opposition's ire over controversial remarks made by some of its leaders, BJP today made it clear that all party workers should realise their responsibility and not create unnecessary controversies at a time when the country is happy with government's performance.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, when asked if the party's national executive discussed the issue during its two-day deliberations, said there is no need for any discussion on it and instead there was need for clarity.

"There is no need for a discussion on this, instead there is a need for clarity. The country is happy with the performance of the government. Any controversy over some statement is unnecessary. Every responsible party worker should have realisation of this responsibility," he said.

Union Minister Giriraj Singh had recently stirred a row with his alleged "racist" remarks on Congress President Sonia Gandhi, saying she would not have been accepted by the Congress chief had she been a Nigerian.

Singh was forced to regret after party leadership, including Amit Shah reprimanded him saying the use of such language was unacceptable.

The remarks drew wide condemnation, with Sonia Gandhi saying it is a result of people with "narrow mindsets" even as her party leaders demanding that Singh be sacked from the Union Ministry.

The Nigerian High Commisioner in India also strongly objected to his remarks.

There have been similar controversies over remarks made by Union Minister Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti and party MP Sakshi Maharaj.

While Sadhvi regretted her remarks, Sakshi was issued a notice?by the party seeking his explanation.
