Class 5 and 8 board exams to make comeback?

New Delhi: Class five and eight board exams are all set to make a comeback as states have agreed on the proposal.

The consensus was reached between states during a meeting of the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE) held in New Delhi last week.

Madhya Pradesh had recently cleared the proposal to reinstate class five and eight board exams and forwarded the same to the Centre for approval.

Just days ago, reports had surfaced that the Central government is planning to make the Class X board exams compulsory again for schools affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

The Centre is also mulling to scrap the no-detention policy, which was introduced under the Right to Education Act, in a phased manner.

The issue came up for discussion at the CABE meeting in the wake of complaints from parents and teachers that the no-detention policy and optional Class X board exams have led to depletion in the quality of school education.

CABE is the highest education policy advisory body of the HRD Ministry.
