San Francisco: Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, Ambassador Asoke Kumar Mukerji is hopeful about New Delhi playing a larger and more responsible role at the United Nations.

Speaking to ANI, Mukerji said, "The big change in last few years has been focus into the process of how to create additional seats that are required in order for countries like India to become permanent members [of the UN Security Council]."India had joined the U.N. in 1945, but geo-political realities have changed drastically since then, when the set-up of the current council was decided."

"It is our hope that in this session of the General Assembly, which ends on September 14, we will agree on a process to create an additional seat. After that, it is for individual countries like India, which want to play bigger responsibility in the United Nation Security Council, to be elected as a new member of the Security Council," Mukerji said.

Meanwhile, at the Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, more than 1,400 members of the U.N, US, United Religions Initiative and other organisations participated in a memorial to former UN secretary-general Dag Hammarskjold.
