Five reasons why Rohith Vemula shouldn't have committed suicide

New Delhi: Rohith Vemula, a Dalit scholar at University of Hyderabad, committed suicide following a long discrimination by the University authorities.

The 28-year-old, a second year research scholar of science, technology and society studies department, was found hanging in his friend's room in the hostel on Sunday.

The protests over suicide of a Dalit research scholar rocked University of Hyderabad while police booked central minister Bandaru Dattatreya and three others for abetment of suicide and also for violations of the SC/ST act.

But was suicide a solution? Wouldn't living and fighting for the betterment of his community members would have been a better idea? Here are five reasons why Rohith Vemula should have live and fought instead of giving up:

1. Rohith should have learnt from his idol Dr BR Ambedkar. Despite being exceptionally talented, even Ambedkar had to undergo discrimination and humiliation before emerging as the icon for independent India.

2. In his suicide note, Rohith requests his pending seven months scholarship of Rs 1,75000 to be given to his family. It shows his concerns for his family. He should have thought about his family, especially mother, who struggled poverty and social discrimination to ensure a good education for him.

3. Learning from his own mother, who fought poverty and social discrimination to ensure his proper upbringing, Rohith Vemula should have preferred to fight the system instead of quitting.

4. Suicide is definitely not a solution to the problems of life. Instead of committing suicide, he should fought for the rights of his community.

5. Just at the age of 28-years, Rohith was a double JRF before enrolling for Ph.D in the prestigious Hyderabad Central University. He had a bright future. He should have stayed alive to fulfil his ambition of becoming a writer.
