Furore in Parliament over PM Narendra Modi's remark on demonetisation

New Delhi: After stalling Parliament for days over the 'absence' of the Prime Minister during the debate on demonetisation, the Opposition, Friday, changed its track to demand that Narendra Modi apologise for allegedly insulting them.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi while hitting out at the criticism over demonetisation, said the Opposition was charged up not because the government was not prepared for its implementation but because it did not get time to prepare itself.

"A lot of people are criticising demonetisation in Parliament. But most of the criticism is that the government was not prepared to implement the decision," Modi said during the Constitution Day celebration function at the Parliament House Annexe.

"But that is not the real reason behind their criticism. They are hurt because the government didn`t give them enough time to prepare for it."

"Even if they had got 72 hours to prepare themselves, they would have commended the move," the Prime Minister said.

Expectedly, as soon as Parliament reconvened, the Opposition was up on its feet demanding that the Prime Minister apologise to Parliament for allegedly insulting MPs.

“PM will have to apologise to the Parliament for accusing that Opposition parties are in favour of black money,” said Ghulam Nabi Azad in Rajya Sabha.

With PM Modi being on a visit to Punjab today, the Opposition also said that there can be no discussion on demonetisation.

Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad, said, “There are two conditions for holding a discussion. First, PM Modi had promised that he will be here. Secondly, today morning the Prime Minister said that the Opposition is favouring black money. He will have to apologise in the house before we go ahead with the debate.”
