Is your child's school maintaining proper sanitation facilities? Here’s how you can check

For any parent, their child is the source of biggest happiness and worry; more so when it comes to small children.

Most mothers spend the better part of their best years taking care of their offspring. From food to healthcare to sanitation, there's nothing a mother leaves to chance.

But what about the hours your child spend in the school? Is there a way you can be sure that your young child is not exposed to unsanitary conditions?

The answer - National School Sanitation Initiative (NSSI) rating system where schools are graded as on parameters like access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities.

Schools are rated in five colour categories according to their sanitation status

Green rating: 91-100% of norms followed

Blue: 50-74%

Yellow: 34-49%

Black: Below 33% adherence to the norms

Red: Needs Immediate attention

Though started in 2009 by the Union HRD Ministry, NSSI was and remains one of those schemes that are well meant but fail at the implementation level with many school yet not willing to put their facilities to scrutiny.
