New Delhi: A Delhi court sent JNU students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya to 3-day police custody. The Delhi Police had sought 7-day police remand of the duo.
Accused of sedition, Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya had surrendered before the police around midnight on Tuesday, hours after the Delhi High Court asked them to surrender before law.
The two students had approached High Court seeking security before they surrender, however, the court denied the plea.
The court said: "You can't use your whim and fancy. You have to follow the procedure, surrender or arrest. You have to be produced before a magistrate and he will decide whether you go into police custody or jail."
The duo had returned to the JNU campus last Sunday after having gone missing since February 12.
Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhattacharya and three other students had allegedly raised anti-national slogans in the JNU campus at a cultural event organised on the death anniversary of terrorist Afzal Guru.
Besides Khalid and Bhattacharya, the other students are Rama Naga, Ashutosh Kumar and Anant Prakash.
