'Loans taken by poor from NABARD should be waived'

CPI on Monday demanded that loans taken by poor people from NABARD for construction of homes be waived as done for development works given by the bank to the state government.

Salem: CPI on Monday demanded that loans taken by poor people from NABARD for construction of homes be waived as done for development works given by the bank to the state government.

Party's National executive member D Pandian said those who avail of such loans were economically weak and may not be able to repay it. It was regrettable that NABARD was taking steps to recover dues by putting up the homes for auction.

He said loans are being given to the state government for development works and in many instances, are waived. Similar step should be taken for the poor people, he said.

He alleged that both the centre and Tamil Nadu governments had failed to control price rise.

He was speaking after observing a one day fast in front collectorate today with this demand.
