Maldivian Foreign Minister on 2-day visit from tomorrow

Maldivian Foreign Minister is expected to brief Swaraj on the internal developments in her country.

New Delhi: Maldivian Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon will arrive tomorrow to hold talks with her Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj during which she is expected to apprise the External Affairs Minister of the political situation in the island nation.

During her talks, Maumoon is expected to brief Swaraj on the internal developments in her country including the recent imposition of 30 day State of Emergency by President Abdulla Yameen which was lifted before time after requests from many countries including the US and Sri Lanka and the Commonwealth.

"Following up on neighbourhood engagement. Soon after EAM @SushmaSwaraj's visit to Maldives, Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon set to visit India on 21-22 November," the Spokesperson in the External Affairs Ministry tweeted.

"The Foreign Minister's visit, soon after the Joint Commission Meeting in Male last month, to meet her counterpart Swaraj is a clear signal of the intensity of the vibrant and robust relationship between Maldives and India," Maldivian High Commissioner Ahmed Mohamed said.

Maumoon's visit comes nearly a month after Swaraj's trip to Male during which she co-chaired a Joint Commission meeting and called on Yameen who had bluntly told her that his government will not tolerate that "foreign parties" interfere in domestic issues.

The remarks were downplayed by India, maintaining that they were aimed at the Commonwealth and not at it.
