New Delhi: The Mother Teresa is likely to be canonised on September 4 this year. Pope Francis will preside over a consistory or formal meeting with cardinals and church officials on Tuesday to approve the canonisation of the founder of the Missionaries of Charity.

The event, a day before Mother Teresa's death anniversary, will be followed by a thanksgiving celebration in Kolkata on October 2.

According to a report in the Catholic News Services, the other four who will be considered for canonisation are - Argentine "gaucho priest," Blessed Jose Gabriel del Rosario Brochero and Blessed Jose Sanchez del Rio, a 14-year-old Mexican boy martyred for refusing to renounce his faith during the Cristero War of the 1920s.

The consistory formally marks the an end to the process of approving a new saint.

On December  17 last year, Pope Francis had approved “miraculous healing” by Mother Teresa. It involved the miraculous healing of a now 42-year-old man in Brazil, who was in a coma after being diagnosed with a viral brain infection. He was cured after his wife prayed to her.

Mother Teresa's 'beautification', another step towards sainthood, took place in October 2003 after then Pope John Paul II recognised the healing of an Indian woman who was suffering with stomach tumour.

The canonisation process involves a special mass by the Pope at St Peter’s Square. Sometime the process also takes place in the country of the person, who is declared a saint.
