North India enjoys warm day; cold stays in Kashmir, Himachal

Cold wave abated in most parts of Northern India on Saturday even as mercury continued to hover around the freezing point in hills of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir.

New Delhi: Cold wave abated in most parts of Northern India on Saturday even as mercury continued to hover around the freezing point in hills of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir.

It was a pleasant day in the national capital which saw the maximum temperature settling five notches above the season's average at 28.6 degrees Celsius. The minimum here was recorded at 10.6 degrees.

In Jammu and Kashmir, capital Srinagar recorded a low of minus 0.2 degree, as against minus 0.8 degree the previous night, a MeT spokesman said.

Frontier Ladakh region experienced huge relief from the intense cold wave as the minimum temperatures rose by ten degrees there even as the mercury continued to hover around the freezing point elsewhere in the division.

Leh recorded a low of minus 2.6 degrees Celsius, up by 10 degrees from minus 12.7 degrees Celsius the previous night, a MeT department spokesperson said.

The Met said that the nearby Kargil town continued to be the coldest recorded place in the state as the minimum temperature settled at minus 15 degrees.

In most parts of Punjab and Haryana temperature stayed several notches above normal.

Chandigarh, recored 10.6 degrees, three notches above normal.

However, Amritsar recorded minimum at 4 degrees, two notches below normal.

In Rajasthan, mercury shot up by several notches giving respite to people in the state.

Mercury rose by one to five degree Celsius during night at all places.

In Himachal Pradesh, barring the high altitude areas, where the cold persisted, the day was pleasant in mid and lower hills with mercury rising by two to three degrees.

The hilly areas reeled under sub zero temperatures with mercury staying between minus 10 and minus 22 degrees.
