New Delhi: As Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) row continues to be a debating point, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) office-bearers, who had resigned from the student wing of the BJP, have decided to burn a copy of the ancient legal text 'Manusmriti' on International Women’s Day.
Three members of JNU unit of ABVP last month resigned from the student wing in protest against the Centre's handling of the raging row at the premier university and "legitimising" actions of right wing fascist forces.
According to a report published in the 'Hindustan Times', the two students and present vice president of ABVP JNU unit Jatin Goraiya alleged Manusmriti was anti-women and anti-Dalit.
Backing the decision, Narwal said that BR Ambedkar who drafted the Constitution also burned a copy of Manusmriti. “It has text which legitimised gender and caste discrimination and text which speaks derogatory of women,” he said.
Meanwhile, reacting to Narwal's decision, JNUSU joint secretary and ABVP member Saurabh Sharma said it seems these students are are under pressure from some teachers.
RSS had once termed Manusmriti as the "most worshippable scripture after the Vedas".
Manusmriti, an ancient Hindu scripture, has repeatedly been slammed by Dalit bodies for its views on the community.
