Port Louis: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived here yesterday, as part of his three- nation tour of Indian Ocean countries, tweeted on Thursday that he was 'humbled by the affection at the civic reception.

The PM wrote on the micro-blogging site Twitter: “Humbled by the affection at the civic reception earlier today. Thankful to sisters and brothers of Mauritius.”

In another tweet he wrote: “National Day celebrations at Port Louis were phenomenal. Glad I got the opportunity to be a part of the celebrations.”

The official Twitter handle of PMO also posted pictures of the civic reception.

Meanwhile, an India-built naval patrol vessel for Mauritius that will help in better policing its vast exclusive economic zone was commissioned today by PM Modi who said it will make the Indian Ocean "more safer and secure".

The induction of the 1,300-tonne vessel 'Barracuda' for the Mauritian National Coast Guard amid attempts by China to establish its presence in the Indian Ocean Region marks the first of such sales to this strategic island nation which include fast attack craft under construction in Indian shipyards.

It is the first defence export order for a warship built in India.

Mauritius has a vast 2.3 million sq km of Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Earlier, PM Modi was the chief guest at Mauritius' 47th National Day celebrations today where Indian navy helicopters were part of the impressive parade.

Mauritius President Rajkeswur Purryag also attended the event, as per PTI.

Apart from Indian naval helicopters, choppers from the Maldivian police, Dornier aircraft and French Transall military transport plane took part in the fly-past.

Indian naval band also took part in the parade which lasted nearly an hour.

There were demonstration of close combat military techniques by special mobile forces of Mauritius.

Yesterday soon after his arrival here, Prime Minister Modi had said he was excited about the National Day celebrations, a date which is special to all Indians because Mahatma Gandhi began his Dandi March on the same date in 1930.

He said attending such events reflect the richness of bilateral relationship.
