New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's surprise visit to Lahore to meet his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif has not gone down well with the Opposition parties in India.

As soon as Modi announced on Twitter that he will meet Sharif in Lahore this afternoon on his way back to New Delhi from Afghanistan, JD(U) general secretary KC Tyagi said the PM was going to Pakistan to eat the birthday cake of Dawood Ibrahim. The mastermind of the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts is turning 60 tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Ajoy Kumar wondered whether India-Pakistan relations were improved that the PM is meeting Sharif today.

Former Union minister Manish Tewari cautioned: "This adventure of PM Modi is going to have serious implications on India's national security. If the decision is not preposterous, it is utterly ridiculous."

Modi will be the first Indian prime minister to visit Pakistan after Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2004.

Modi`s decision comes soon after he blamed Pakistan - although without taking the country`s name - for terrorism in Afghanistan and for allegedly trying to harm India-Afghanistan ties.
