New Delhi: Congress on Saturday said there should not be "pick and choose" policy for handing over bodies of those hanged to their family members and it should be same for all.
"Generally whosoever have been hanged to death, bodies have been handed over to their family members. It happened in the recent case of Yakub Memon. Since Memon's body has been handed over to his family...After having done so there should not be pick and choose over handing bodies to families," senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad told reporters here.
The Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha said this when asked whether Afzal Guru's body, should have been handed over to his family after the execution.
Guru, convict of the 2001 Parliament attack, was hanged in 2013 and there have been demands for return of mortal remains of the Guru, must be returned to his family.
The body of the lone convict of 1993 Mumbai blast convict Yakub Memon was handed over to his family by the jail authorities on July 30.
Azad said "There has been a demand in Kashmir for this (for returning mortal remains of Guru). That demand will be more in future."
The senior Congress leader said "It is ultimately Supreme Court should take notice of it and should take decision and it should be applicable to all the people and all the religion across the country."
