Sonia Gandhi meets leaders of Tamil Nadu Congress committee

Delhi: In the backdrop of GK Vasan's exit from the Congress over 'mishandling' of party affairs, Sonia Gandhi met senior leaders of Tamil Nadu Congress committee on Thursday.

Amongst other leaders, former Finance Minister P Chidambaram was also present in the meeting with the Congress president.

Yesterday P Chidambaram's son, Karti Chidambaram, had ruffled a few feathers when he had disapproved of the role of high command's observers in managing affairs of the states.

"Thought should be given to the present managerial structure in regard to the high command's observers. Managing party affairs in states and changes that are necessary should be made," Karti, an AICC member, had told PTI.

His views assume significance coming against the background of allegations by Vasan and his supporters of mishandling affairs in Tamil Nadu by party in charge Mukul Wasnik.

On the differences among several leaders in Tamil Nadu unit in the running party, he had said efforts should be made to evolve a consensus on all issues, overcoming differences as it happened in Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee. "Such a consensus should be put forward unitedly to Delhi."

Asked about his role in bringing out such a consensus, Karti, who unsuccessfully contested from his father's constituency Sivaganga in the last Lok Sabha elections, had stated, "As a dedicated party worker I will fully cooperate with the leadership and work along with the cadres for the growth of party and people."

At a time when former Union Minister EVKS Elangovan has just assumed office as president of TNCC, he had said a "consultative and collaborative" style of leadership was the best way forward for the party in the state to make it a "more vibrant" unit.

On Vasan's exit, he had maintained, "even if it is an ordinary party worker it will weaken the party especially in the present scenario," apparently referring to the lean phase the party was going through at the national level.

He, however, had added that Vasan could have "motives" in launching a party now. "He may align with the BJP as a regional party."
