Mumabi: A good news for Mumbai residents has finally arrived. One of the seven lakes supplying portable water to the city started overflowing in the wee hours on Monday, civic officials said.
Interestingly, this is the second lake which has started to overflow, the first was the Tulsi late.
Vehar lake is one among the seven city-based reservoirs which supplies potable water to the mega-polis.
Mumbai has already received 75 per cent of its average rainfall in the first two months of the rainy season, officials of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MGCM) said.
Earlier this year, on July 19, the Tulsi lake, which also supplies potable water to the city, had started overflowing from 6.00 AM.
Mumbai's water supply comes from seven reservoirs which store rainwater collected during the rains.
These are Modak Sagar, Tansa lake, Vehar lake, Tulsi lake, Upper Vaitarna, Bhatsa and Middle Vaitarna.
The civic body supplies 3,750 million litres of water everyday to the island city and suburbs, which falls short of the actual demand for 4,200 million litres.
In recent past, insufficient rainfall had forced MCGM to cut short the water supply at times.
Recently, the civic body had revoked 20 per cent cut in the water supply to the mega-polis, which was imposed in August last year.
