BSF official charged with assault, transferred

A BSF company commander has been removed from his place of posting along the Bangladesh border after four women Indian villagers levelled assault charges against him.

Shillong, July 12: A BSF company commander has been removed from his place of posting along the Bangladesh border after four women Indian villagers, who allegedly crossed over from Bangladesh and were detained by the troops, levelled assault charges against him.
Company Commander of the 121 Battalion deployed at Dawki,
Abdesh Kumar Sharma, was removed yesterday and the BSF has initiated a departmental inquiry into the matter, BSF sources today.

The four women were reportedly detained by the BSF troops led by Sharma on Friday on charges of crossing the border illegally. The women, who were released after interrogation,
later alleged that they were assaulted.

The area was already tensed after a BSF constable was allegedly assaulted by the village headman of Bakur on Wednesday night.

BSF DIG Ravi Gandhi told reporters today a reconciliation meeting was held with the villagers last evening and normalcy
was restored.

The company commander has been removed to restore the confidence of the people along the border who are stakeholders of border management, Gandhi said, adding the matter was blown out of proportion as the BSF officials were only doing their duty.
