New Delhi: Adding to the list of reluctant senior members who are not willing to fight the upcoming Lok Sabha polls on Congress ticket, Union Minister P Chidambaram opted out of the fray while making way for his son Karti Chidambaram.
Congress nominated Karti from Sivaganga constituency in Tamil Nadu and gave him ticket to fight from his father’s seat from where the Union Minister used to fight elections earlier.
Soon after the announcement was made by the Congress party in its fourth list of candidates for the Lok Sabha polls, Karti told the reporters that he is honoured with the party’s decision.
“Honoured that Congress has bestowed this on me,” Karti said.
He added, “It is a huge challenge and I shall work hard. Sivaganga is well organised and ready for polls.”
However, he also made it clear that his father is not retiring from politics; he has just made way for Karti.
“My father has contested nine elections and thought it is time to give way. He is definitely not retiring from politics," Karti said.
Yesterday night, the Congress party declared the names of 50 candidates in its fourth list of candidates but still has not named who will contest from Varanasi against Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.
Menawhile, another Union Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad was brought as a candidate from Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir.
The name of Azad and Karti figure in the list of 50 Congress Lok Sabha candidates announced today, which also brought an end to speculation over remaining two Lok Sabha seats of Delhi West Delhi and South Delhi with the party re-nominating sitting MPs Mahabal Mishra and Ramesh Kumar.
Congress had already nominated sitting MPs in five other seats of Delhi. With the announcement today, all seven sitting MPs of Congress stand re-nominated.
