Cong, CPM flay MP Govt over reports of `virginity tests`

Congress and CPI-M on Monday flayed BJP government in Madhya Pradesh over reports of virginity test of girls conducted before their marriage under a special scheme.

New Delhi, July 13: Congress and CPI-M on Monday flayed
BJP government in Madhya Pradesh over reports of virginity
test of girls conducted before their marriage under a special
scheme.

Congress MP Santosh Bagrodia, who raised the issue of the
virginity tests allegedly done by the state government on June
26 when 151 girls were to be married under `Mukhya Mantri
Kanyadan Yojana`, told reporters outside Parliament, "If the
tests have happened, it should be condemned."

Terming it "demeaning" and "injustice to women", he
demanded strict action against those on whose directives the
alleged tests were carried out and also a change in rules if
there was any such provision in the existing scheme.

CPI(M) polit bureau member Brinda Karat said it was an
attack on the dignity and self esteem of those girls who are
being married under the government scheme.

"Carrying out physical test of girls by any government
agency engaged in mass-marriage is very wrong. It`s an attack
on the dignity and self esteem of those girls," she said.

Meanwhile BJP leader Najma Heptulla said no such incident
had taken place. "Chief Minister of the state denied that any
such incident took place. The deputy collector had also given
a report saying nothing of this sort happened. Giving such
wrong publicity will badly affect those girls," she said.
